Alexander A. Berlin
Born September 27, 1940, Moscow
A.A. Berlin graduated from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (1963).
Since 1963 till present, he has been working at the Semenov Institute of Chemical Physics (now – N.N. Semenov Federal Research Center for Chemical Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences), where he moved through the positions of research assistant, junior researcher, senior researcher, head of laboratory, head of department, deputy director, director (from 1996 till 2017). At present, A.A. Belin is the scientific research supervisor of FRCCP RAS.
Corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (since 1994), academician (since 2003, Department of Chemistry and Materials Science, RAS).
One of the founders of the scientific school of chemical physics of polymers.

Key research results:
- basic research on kinetics, thermodynamics, and mechanisms of polymerization processes; macrokinetics of ultrafast chemical processes; destruction and combustion of polymer materials, including mechanisms of degradation and toughness of polymers, reinforced and filled composite materials;
- creating a theory of macrokinetics of fast reactions in turbulent flows;
- discovery of a novel phenomenon of dispersion of polymer matrix under the action of microexplosions of capsules with low boiling superheated flame retardant;
- generating new approaches to reducing flammability of polymers and implementation of novel polymeric materials with reduced flammability;
- applying computer simulation for obtaining new results in condensed-matter physics relating to crystalline-glass state transitions, and melting and glass transition processes.
Since the 1970s, A.A. Berlin has been conducting research in the field of polymer degradation and stabilization, development of novel catalytic systems for producing monomers and oligomers from polymer wastes and wastes of petrochemical production, carried out in collaboration with researchers from Bashkortostan.
He took part in the development of novel resource-saving and energy-saving technologies which are applied in manufacturing of isoprene and butadiene-styrene rubbers, isobutylene, methyl ethyl ketone, ethyl chloride, and dichloroethane.
Author of more than 900 research publications, 7 monographs, and 100 patents.
Editor-in-Chief of the journal ‘Polymer Science, Series D’, a member of Editorial Board of the journals ‘Polymer Science’, ‘Russian Journal of Physical Chemistry B’.
Winner of Government Prize of the Russian Federation, Prize of the Republic of Tatarstan, V.A. Kargin Prize (2001).
A. A. Berlin is awarded the Order of Peoples’ Friendship.
